How to identify your WordPress version

How do you know which version of WordPress your site is actually using?

It’s a simple question, but it’s surprising how many people don’t know the answer. Maybe you’ve inherited a site from someone else, or maybe your auto-updates have been quietly running in the background. Either way, knowing your current version is the first step to understanding how up-to-date – and how secure – your website really is.

The good news? It only takes a few seconds to find out.

There are a few quick ways to check your WordPress version:

  • Log in to your dashboard and scroll down – most sites show the version number in the bottom right.
  • If you have access to your site files, open the readme.html file in your root directory.
  • You can also check the version inside the file /wp-includes/version.php if you’re comfortable looking at a bit of code.

Once you know where you stand, you can make more informed decisions about updates, compatibility, and risk. And if your version is more than a few releases behind, it might be time to start thinking about an upgrade plan.
